35 ‘Superior’ Choir Singers Advance to State Contest

Midway High School Choir is on the path to success in this year’s UIL Solo and Ensemble competition. On Feb. 18, 46 MHS Choir students competed in the UIL Solo and Ensemble Contest with 35 singers earning a Division 1 “Superior” rating on their class 1 solo and qualifying for the Texas State Solo and Ensemble Contest.

Additionally, four students earned Division 1 “Superior” ratings on their class 1 ensemble, also advancing to the state competition. 10 more soloists earned a Division 2 “Excellent” rating on their class 1 solo. The Texas State Solo and Ensemble Contest will be held on May 27 and 29 in Austin.

Each singer then performs their selection in front of a judge who evaluates every aspect of their performance and awards a rating from 1 to 5.

Midway also saw success in the local UIL Solo and Ensemble competition this year with 79 singers earning a Division 1 “Superior” rating on their class 2 or 3 Solo or Ensemble and18 singers earning a Division 2 “Excellent” rating on their class 2 or 3 Solo or Ensemble.

Midway Choir sees great success at these events thanks to a dedicated team of voice teachers: Julianne Best, David Guess, Tina Hays, Kate Bishop, and Shawna Furman; and the following accompanists who spend countless hours preparing students: Maggie Stith, Mary Bashara, and Shawna Furman.
