Midway ISD employs a number of new teachers each year. Some of these employees are first year teachers, and they often have few supplies or decorations for their classrooms. Often, teachers would like to have these additional items for their classrooms so that their rooms are as attractive as their veteran neighbors’ classrooms.
The Midway ISD Education Foundation helps to address this challenge by establishing the Rookie Assistance Awards. This program provides a $100 reimbursement for each first year teacher to use as needed to purchase classroom supplies.
“I’m so proud of this initiative to support first year teachers.” Suzi Pagel, Executive Director of Midway ISD Education Foundation said, “Most of these new teachers graduated (from college) with tuition debt and none of them have received their first Midway paycheck yet.”
These awards are presented every year at the new teacher orientation.
“The help the Education Foundation provided allowed me to purchase supplies to get started and also made me feel part of the Midway family.” Felecia Resendez, 2014 Rookie Assistance recipient and Midway Middle School Texas History teacher and cheer sponsor said. “The rookie incentive is just another way that Midway stands out as an amazing district that cares and wants to support their teachers.”
This year’s Rookie Assistance Program was made possible by John Houston Custom Homes. The founder of this company, John Houston, was a Midway ISD graduate.
