Thanksgiving at Park Hill Elementary School had a special significance this year as students, families, and staff gathered to celebrate a holiday all about community.
Like other elementary schools in Midway ISD, Park Hill joined in the tradition of inviting families to attend a Thanksgiving-themed lunch with their students featuring traditional holiday dishes prepared by cafeteria staff.
“We were excited about being able to offer our families the opportunity to come into our building to enjoy this special tradition,” Park Hill Elementary School Assistant Principal Christy Bowling said.
To get their campus ready for the occasion, students created festive hats and colorful Thanksgiving decorations to transform the cafeteria, and food service staff prepared a traditional Thanksgiving feast that included mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, and rolls. Park Hill Elementary Principal Mandy Johnson and Bowling helped serve the Thanksgiving meal staples turkey and dressing while connecting with families and students.
Since Park Hill opened its doors to students for the first time in August, Principal Johnson has worked hard to foster community around the campus.
“Starting the year as a brand new campus has been exciting,” Bowling said. “Our first semester has been full of relationship building with our new students and families.”
Their theme for the year, Make Your Mark at The Park, encourages students to adopt a growth mindset as they enter a new school community, and by joining in on the Thanksgiving lunch tradition, they had the opportunity to do just that.
“It’s a favorite event for both students and families,” Bowling said. “We absolutely hope to continue the tradition for many years to come.”
