Friends of Midway 2013

By Kayci Evans, Baylor Intern

Midway ISD annually spotlights a group called “Friends of Midway,” a nominated collection of parents, volunteers, and businesses that have continually donated their time and money to help the district be the best for its students. The 2013 Friends of Midway include Robin Ameny, Pam Watts, the Fentress Foundation, Rudy’s BBQ, and even one person who insisted on remaining anonymous. The Friends of Midway were awarded glass bowls that are original designs by Robert Rynearson, art teacher at Midway Middle School. The pieces were commissioned to be as unique as the Friends of Midway, with Midway spirit colors inside and out.

Robin Ameny is a parent volunteer at Woodgate Intermediate and was nominated because of the countless hours she has put towards the school’s garden and making it a more educational tool for their students. She has continually made MISD elementary GT students an obligation and inspired the students to delve into gardening while sacrificing time from her work, schooling, and family life. One boy who has worked with Robin in the garden even said that she has “brought the garden back to life” thanks to her hard work and dedication to the project.

Pam Watts, also a parent volunteer, has helped plan many events in the district. Mrs. Watts has displayed a special interest for “at-risk” children, and this has been her fuel for planning many heartwarming events. Mrs. Watts arranged for the EXCEL students to visit the TSTC administration, as well as a meal plan for the trip. In addition to the trip to TSTC, Mrs. Watts put together a Thanksgiving meal for the students. After contacting community members, PTA representatives, and local businesses, she coordinated a large meal for the students on the last day of school before Thanksgiving break. She did not stop there though. Mrs. Watts also arranged for several food packs to be delivered to the school office for students to take on their way home for the holiday, along with multiple gift cards given to special students whose family was having a hard time, that way they could still have their Thanksgiving Day meal. All and all, Mrs. Watts has shown what it looks like to have a heart for service and a love for your community.

The Fentress Foundation is a private basis in McLennan County that is committed to the betterment of Waco and the Central Texas area. Established in 1960, the Fentress Foundation has supported many local organizations, charities, and schools, including the Midway ISD Education Foundation. Executive Director Lee Humphreys and his wife Leandra have designated generous contributions from this foundation to support the mission of the Education Foundation for the past four years. Thanks to their help, the Education Foundation has been able to fund numerous classroom grants across the district year after year.

For the past ten years Rudy’s BBQ and Country Store has made many contributions to Midway ISD for various district luncheons and donor events that would not have been possible without their help. From the Spirit of Midway Breakfast to the Back to School Summit luncheon and Convocation for staff, Rudy’s Country Store has graciously donated excellent meals to serve the parents, faculty and staff. The continual kindness of Rudy’s keeps staff energized during important times of the school year.

Midway ISD is truly grateful for these generous souls supporting our schools!
