Midway Freshman Finals in Discovery 3M Young Scientist Challenge

IMG_9795e260 X 240 LMany 14-year-old boys mow the lawn… but how many think about the energy crisis and fossil fuels while mowing? How many then invent a way to use yard waste to create energy? Just one! As an eighth grader last year in Dana McMahan’s class, Midway High School freshman Edward S. Kim invented a fuel cell that converts grass to energy for a science fair project. Edward’s project has continued to advance through competitions all spring and summer, culminating in the 2013 Discovery and 3M Young Scientist Challenge on October 8. Edward was one of the top 10 finalists in the United States, and he was featured on NBC’s “Wake Up With Al!” in New York City along with the eventual winner, Peyton Robertson.
