Girls of spring have their eyes on state… again!

Following the run to the state championship game by Midway’s “Boys of Fall” in football, the Pantherette “Girls of Spring” are gearing up to bring home state titles.

Last spring, the Pantherettes were a force to be reckoned with- almost every girls sport went to the state competition level! In swimming, tennis, and track & field, individuals brought home state gold medals. Pantherette softball placed second in the state, and soccer placed third. Golf also competed in the state tournament.

With such a strong history of girls athletics at the state level, this spring is sure to be exciting for Midway.


Midway Girls Basketball competed in the State Tournament in 1966, 1974, 1977, 1980, 1996, and 1997. Oh, but that does not count all the times they WON state! Basketball brought home State Championships in 1955, 1969, 1973, 1975, 1976, 1994, and 2009,


Amongst many district, area and sectional titles, Midway Girls Soccer finished as State Finalist in 2004, and State Semi-Finalist in 2003, 2010 and most recently in 2011. In 17 years, they are 158-13-2 in district play and 283-108-24 overall.


From 2008 to 2011, Midway Girls Swimming ranked in the state swim meet finals, with Emily Neubert bringing home four state gold medals and two silver. Midway ranks in the 4A Texas All-Time Records in five events: 50 Free, 100 Fly, 100 Free, 200 Free Relay, and 400 Free Relay. Since 2008, 12 Girls have been named to the All-State team representing eight of the 12 different events: MC Driese, Natalie Hoover, Emily Neubert, Leah Plemmons, Taylor Shaw, Kayley Valentien, Courtney Willingham, Stephanie Wayne, Taylor Rhodes, Shelby Crow, Simona Smolenova and Miranda Angel.


The Kilgo family brought in multiple state titles for Midway Tennis. Kenna Kilgo and her brother Kolby were Mixed Doubles State Runner-Up in 2009 and State Champions in 2010.  Kenna brought home the Girls Singles State Champion in 2011. Also last year,  Jessica Sawyer and Jacob Brendemuehl competed in the Mixed Doubles State Quarterfinals.


The Midway Girls Golf Team played in the state tournament in 2007 and 2011. This past spring, the team of four seniors and one sophomore were also ranked amongst the top in the state academically.
